Note: this catalogue states this MS's current location as BL MS Egerton 3046, but this is evidently out of confusion with Ruskin's Greek Gospel Lectionary (no. 1048 in this catalogue.) | Notes from this catalogue: Byzanto-Cretan. Written in cursive Greek minuscules. Twenty-one large miniatures (of which 16 are full-, three-quarter, or half-page) in red, blue, orange, green, purple, etc., on burnished gold grounds; 17 head-pieces decorated with geometric or floral patterns on gold grounds; numerous initial letters in gold and colors. Imperfect at beginning and end -- lacks fol. 4 and final leaf of Malachi at end. Some marginal notes by Ruskin. | Ruskin's Catalogue A (shelf 1). Probably also Ruskin's Catalogue D (Brantwood, 1894) II.6. | Ruskin though this was a 10th-c. MS until C.S. Gregory examined it and told him the true date. | Additional Provenance Notes: a different hand inscribes the Greek date for 1563 on the last page. (This was apparently first noticed by Gregory when he examined the MSS in JR's collection, but he recorded, in error, 1463.) John Ruskin bookplate. Arthur Severn sold this MS at Sotehby's, 24 July 1930, no. 6, for £145. Mann returned this MS and it was sold again, Sotheby's 18 May 1931, no. 56, £54. Sold Sotheby's 3/4 May 1948 (catalogue for 1948, no. 436, £260. Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd. catalogue for 1948, £525. Sold Sotheby's 10 June 1963, no. 125, £620 to Maggs Bros. for Major J.R. Abbey (JA 7205). Sold Sotheby's 20 June 1978, no. 2988. | Literature: Ruskin Works, xxxiv, p. 701. W.G. Collingwood, Ruskin Relics (1904), p. 198. J.S. Dearden, "John Ruskin the Collector," in The Library, 5th ser., 21 (1966), no. 51.
